League of legends has 5 positions that can be played, and what position you play heavily depends on your personal style, the characters you like and what you want to be to the team. Each position is very unique, and mos players specialize in one and then have what's called a secondary to work for a larger variety of teams. So let's get right into it.
Support

Support is probably the most self explanatory role. Your job is well, to support. These kinds of characters and typically low damage, but have lots of utility like healing or stunning opponents. Supports are one of the more diverse roles of characters, with a style to fit everyone. Some are very aggressive, and some are more passive. Either way, your going to be a great asset to your team. This role plays in the bottom lane, along with the ADC.

ADC (Attack Damage Carry)

The ADC or attack damage carry is the center of damage on a league of legends team usually. They have low defense, low mobility and typically are easy to kill but can dish out massive amounts of damage very quickly. This playstyle is usually very aggressive, with the goal being to kill as many opponents as possible to get ahead, without dying yourself. It is one of the most difficult positions to play, as your need to play almost perfectly in order to be effective. But it is very rewarding. i personally am an ADC main, so I can confirm while it is difficult it can be incredibly fun. I always enjoy playing the role, no matter what. ADC is also played in the bot lane along with a support. Bot lane is unique because of this, as it is the only duo lane in the game.

Mid

Mid lane are your bursty ( high damage very quickly) characters, usually mages or a kind of assassin. Mid lane is in the center of the map, so how it plays often depends on the team that the opponent has, if they have very agressive characters or styles it might be better to play back, and be more passive. A lot of ADC characters are also good midlaners, so the roles have a lot of overlap and are very similar. It can be very easy, or very hard. It all depends on what the enemy is playing. Mid lane is a solo lane, meaning you are all by yourself. But due to it being in the middle of the map other plays often cross through the lane to you.

Top

Another solo lane, found on the top of the map. Top lane is more isolated then the other lanes, and requires you to be more defense oriented then offense. Top lane is much less flashy then the other lanes, but can be incredibly impotent. It is a more defensive play style, with players usually switching to offensive when they have a opportunity. Top laner's are usually the front line, or damage sponges for the team usually having high armor stats to take even less damage due to abilities or high HP ( hit points)

Jungle

jungle is not in a lane, but rather is all the space between the lanes, The jungler is supposed to kill those monsters and collect the powers they give, then distribute the advantages to the other lanes by ganking them and adding pressure. Junglers often act as the leaders of teams, making calls and urging players around objectives. They also provide tactful vision in the jungle, with can protect your laners from the enemy jungler coming in to kill them. Basically it is the junglers job to be aware and take advantage of opportunities. This role can have a lot of playstyles, with heavy damage to little no no damage but heavy armor. It really varies on the champion you pick.
